The Fundamentals of Place Based Capital
Start with this first session in the Place Based Capital Learning Series. This session will equip you with the basics of capital—money, assets, and resources—and how they impact local communities and economies. You’ll gain foundational knowledge on place based capital, explore how it differs from traditional systems, and preview key topics for future sessions in the Place Based Capital Learning Series. By the end, you’ll be equipped with the confidence to engage fully in the series and take meaningful action within your community or organisation.
Generating Place Based Capital
In this session, we will share with you our place based capital framework that provides a structured approach for those seeking to understand the many ways that communities can generate capital locally. You’ll learn about the many different local sources of funding, assets, and capital that can drive local initiatives, support shared goals, and deliver lasting community benefits. We’ll share ways that you can generate new income streams and assets to help fund community services and sustain local enterprises. You’ll learn about strategies to prioritise and activate local capital enabling communities to retain greater ownership and control over economic activities and build financial self-reliance, resilience and long-term prosperity.
Accessing Place Based Capital
This introductory session explores practical and effective ways for communities and local organisations to better access the capital and resources they need. We’ll introduce a place-based, community-centred approach to accessing capital—one that strengthens local control, economic self-reliance, resilience, and long-term prosperity.
You’ll gain an understanding of existing local capital sources and how to prioritise and activate them, making them more accessible when needed. You’ll discover practical ways to connect those with capital to those who need it, so that they can bring their venture, initiative or project to life. We’ll introduce key concepts, foundational strategies, and examples of structures, vehicles and institutions that can make accessing capital more inclusive, equitable, and aligned with local needs and priorities.
Owning Place Based Capital
This practical session is designed for community members, local organisations, councils, and collaborators who want to understand how to acquire and own the assets that serve their community's goals. Whether you're just beginning or already exploring ownership strategies, this session will build your confidence and capability to move from idea to ownership.
You’ll learn how asset ownership can strengthen community resilience, economic self-reliance, and long-term prosperity. We’ll introduce the practicalities of how communities and organisations can acquire and own assets—what it takes legally, financially, and collectively.
Governing Place Based Capital
This practical session is designed for community members, local organisations and collaborators (government, impact organisations and others) who want to understand how local assets and resources can be governed in ways that strengthen community control, inclusion, and long-term prosperity. Whether you’re just starting to explore governance or already grappling with governance challenges, this session will build your confidence and capability to identify and create governance structures that work for communities.
Pooling Capital
This practical session is designed for community members, local organisations and collaborators (government, impact organisations and others) who want to understand how communities can pool their resources and assets in ways that strengthen local control, increase access to capital, and deliver shared prosperity. This practical session is designed for community members, local organisations, and collaborators (including government, impact organisations, and others) who want to understand how communities can invest their capital — financial, physical, and social — in ways that build local ownership, strengthen resilience, and create shared prosperity. Participants will learn how community capital can be strategically invested to deliver both financial and social returns, support local enterprises and infrastructure, and ensure that the benefits of investment stay in place and serve the wellbeing of people and planet.
